Our homes are special place. It is somewhere that should welcome you with open arms and make you feel comfortable and secure. Simple things can make a big difference. Eliminating clutter, rearranging the furniture, and a new coat of paint are often enough to completely change how your home looks and feels.
Because January is the beginning of the year, it’s the perfect month to get started with a 12-month home makeover. Each month let’s tackle one main task that will help create the home that we dreaming of. Some tasks can take just a few days, or perhaps just hours if you’re industrious. Other monthly tasks can take a bit more time.
So let’s get started with your January home makeover task…
January is a planning and organizing month. It’s when you take a look at the year behind you and assess what worked, and what didn’t. It’s the month when you take a look at your future and decide what you want. So that’s what you’re going to do this month.
January Home Makeover: Take a Home Inventory
For your January home makeover, take a slow walk around your home and start making a plan. You’ll want to take something with you to record your thoughts, goals, ideas, and desires.
For example, you might walk around your home with a camera and a notebook and pen. You can take photos of specific areas of your home and jot down notes for each photo or idea. A simple pen and paper will do as well.
“What are you looking for?” you’re probably asking. As you walk around your home there are several key areas to pay attention to…
Design
Are their areas of your home where you’d like to change the design? Is the design change merely a redecoration project or is it more involved? Are you painting walls or taking them down?
January is a particularly fun task because it supports you to dream and imagine your ideal home. As you notice areas of your home that you like, take note of those as well. What do you like and why do you like it? This will help you create a cohesive look and feel throughout your home.
Clutter and Cleanliness
Clutter is a big problem for a lot of us. As you move from room to room and space to space within each room, where do you notice clutter? You don’t have to start buying organization systems just yet. In fact, please wait. This month is about making a plan and deciding what you want for your home. Future months will have you sorting, organizing, painting and much more.
If you’re eager to get to it and notice items that you just don’t need or can do without, start that “trash and donate” pile. Get that unwanted clutter out of your home. It will make next month’s task much easier.
So go grab your pencil and paper and start your January home makeover by walking through your home. Jot down your ideas. If you’re inspired, you can also begin collecting images from online and magazines that support what you want for your home.
Have fun and a sense of huge accomplishment and we’ll continue this in February!
