How to Improve Your Focus and Minimize Chaos
The life of an entrepreneur can be a hectic one. It’s not uncommon to be working long hours to meet a deadline. And multitasking seems like it’s a necessary approach. How else can you get everything accomplished?
This constant state of business can make it difficult to relax and even more difficult to find focus. These tips and strategies may help you make the difference between feeling unfocused and chaotic to feeling relaxed and focused.
Some of these might sound hokey, but work with me. 🙂 They REALLY do help.
Practice Deep Breathing
Before you sit down to your desk to accomplish something important for you or your business, take four to six deep breaths. Count to four on the inhale and four on the exhale. Make the breaths slow and deep. Scientists have discovered that deep breathing really does calm not only your mind but also your organ systems. Your heart rate slows down, your breathing slows down and you feel a state of calm. Those of you who do yoga are probably nodding your heads right now.
During your deep breathing consider creating a personal and empowering thought.
For example, you might think, “I am completely stopping as I take each deep breath.” Or, “I am calm and productive.” Whatever thought feels most powerful, calming, and centering.
Exercise is one of the best ways to release all of the anxiety and overwhelm you may be experiencing. Before a potentially busy day, consider exercising with a good degree of intensity for thirty minutes. You’ll be able to start your work day with a calm mind and the ability to manage whatever comes your way.
Your mind needs to have a balance of information coming in to work efficiently and be productive.
Try Meditating (Quiet Time)
Consider meditating at the beginning of your day or when you find yourself feeling most unfocused and stressed. Take five or ten minutes away from electronics, people, and noise and simply focus on your breathing and clearing your thoughts. You’ll then be able to focus and stay more relaxed.
When you’re not working unplug from electronics including your cell phone and the television. Give your brain and your body some time away from all of the hustle and demand. Today’s society may be teaching us that we can only give any given project, person, or activity a few seconds of our attention. Slow down and allow your senses to unwind and relax. Chances are you’ll have more focus when you need it.
One More Tip
Studies have shown that multitasking just doesn’t work. It’s actually a slower and less efficient way to work. Being able to focus on one task at a time is not only more pleasurable, it’s also more productive and the results of your efforts will likely be better. Learning to relax and focus is an important business and life skill.
It’s important for us to be able to take a break and step away from work. You might be saying, “But I’m too busy to have a break!” Actually, that’s exactly when you should. Your mind needs to have a balance of information coming in to work efficiently and be productive. It’s just like your body needs to have a balance of nutrients to run properly.
